28 Days

"Yeoman, step back please," Ayda Muldowney's hand fell upon the copper shouldering of a thin youth. She turned, smiled at the Commander with a blush, and nodded. Hands clasped behind her back, the Yeoman took a step to the right and back. Ayda's hand fell and she too put her hands behind her back. Ayda eyed the semi-circle of the transporter pad setup. A sound chirped to her left and she acknowledged it with an eyebrow raise. It was time- diplomatic face on. The scientist's cool intellect had to be pocketed.
"Commander, Starbase 15 signaled. They're ready for transport. Two cycles of personnel and then two of supplies." Ayda studied the young Tellarite woman who spoke from behind the transporter console.
"Bring then in please, Chief Sheev," Muldowney acknowledged, turned back to the view in front of her. With the crescendoing whine of the transporter and the scattering of white and silver sprites, matter coalesced into seven humanoid forms: one Andorian, one Coridanian and five beings that could have been Human or Near-Human. Clearing her throat, Muldowney spoke as she eyed their blue uniforms- one was wearing white, one silver and five more had operations copper. "Welcome aboard the Ulysses," she said, inclining her chin to greet them, "I'm Commander Ayda Muldowney, your new First Officer. If you'll step down off the pad, Chief Yeoman Natoo will take you to the Quartermaster and get you situated. Your schedules will be posted once we are underway." She nodded and smiled as the grouping began to shift and pick up satchels and cases brought with them.
Ayda studied them, murmuring silent hellos and greetings as they passed. Finally, the transporter room fell quiet again and Ayda nodded to the Tellarite chief again. "OK, Sheev."
Again the matter stream brought beams of scattering light and reforming matter: six people. None wore uniforms, but civilian clothes. Their gear was much more complex than that brought by the new crewmen, emblazoned with the symbol of the Federation News Network, in scarlet, on the sides. Ayda's eyes moved from a large crate in front of a Tulian, to the Tulian herself- and then across to the rest of the visitors. "Welcome aboard the Ulysses. I'm Commander Ayda Muldowney, I'm the ship's First Officer. If you'll come with me and Yeoman Petersen," she nodded at the Yeoman to her side, "We'll get you situated in our VIP section. We're pleased to have you."
A woman with ornate, glossy black braids and shockingly blue-green eyes with her mocha-colored skin stepped down with a practiced sway. "Thank you, Commander," she greeted in a distinctly Argellian accent. "Will the Captain be joining us?" She inquired.
Ayda diplomatically smiled, bowing a little, "I'm afraid not. Captain Bach is busy on the Starbase, with their Command staff." The Argellian's azure gaze studied Ayda- it was akin to being studied by Kiam Aax's black colored gaze, but perhaps stranger. Ayda knew Kiam, not this woman. "Oh," she side glanced at the Tulian and a helper, "Don't worry. We'll have some staff help carry your equipment. If you need it."
The Tulian's greenish-blue face and strangely geometric scattering of cheek implants shook their head, "Oh no, I never leave this out of my sight. This is our primary broadcasting and rendering equipment." The Tulian protested defensively. "I'd rather die."
Ayda chuckled to herself while the steady, bemused gaze of the Argellian was constant, "You'll have to excuse Teelap. Nobody touches her equipment. She stared down a Nausicaan on Earhart Station who wanted to," and the Aregllian did air quotes, "Trade for it."
"Ah," Ayda voice, her brows lifting as the Tulian cast a suspicious look to one of the Operations personnel. She slapped away the offering hand of the Yeoman, letting Ayda chuckle anew. "Feisty."
"You have no idea," the Argellian breathed out.
Ayda gestured for her Yeomans to abandoned the stubborn Tulian and her aide to their equipment, and instead to help the rest of the FNN staff. The sound of dragging, clacking and hoisting echoed well past the point that the transporter room doors opened and the trickle of staff began to leave. Ayda led followed by the Argellian woman and one of Ayda's aides. "So you're currently on Deck Three. But we'll be putting you up on Deck Two. Normally we would've brought you in up there, but our main transporter is offline for a diagnostics routine."
Just then the doors to the turbo-lift opened and Doctor Kiamenra Aax exited. At first, her smile was dreamily distracted, yet somehow... mischievous. Ayda raised her brow as Kiam slowed, refocusing on what was going on around them. "Kiam," Ayda greeted.
"Commander," Kiam said with a cautious smile, a glance at the chaotic goings-on. Suddenly there were a lot of new minds and she kept her focus from probing too deeply.
Ayda raised a brow, "Everything alright? You should be off duty," Muldowney said, studying the Doctor's apparel. Ayda looked to the turbo-lift, mouth opening to ask more. Kiam spoke up,
"Oh just getting started. I had some paperwork." Kiam's eyes skirted to the Argellian who smiled.
Ayda nodded slowly, "I see. Oh. Doctor Kiamenra Aax, this is..." Ayda gestured to the Aregllian.
"Uvi Yentas," the Argellian said, and then unabashedly added, "You're a Betazoid, aren't you." She asked. With a chomped lip, Kiam nodded.
Ayda glanced between them, "Kiam is our Chief Medical Officer."
Kiam's studying black eyes scanned the Argellian, "You're an Argellian? I did a three-month study of Argellian Mindfulness Techniques on Sho'an."
The Argellian's polished eyebrow rose, "I am," she swayed into Kiam's intimate space and stood a few inches taller. With graceful gentility, the woman named Uvi passed her fingers down Kiam's face, fingertips just brushing her. "Jyush Cavol."
Kiam smiled and returned the motion, brushing her fingers down Yentas' face, "Jyush Cavol."
Uvi nodded and stepped back, "A pleasure. Commander," she looked back to Ayda. "You were saying, about quarters?"
"Yes," Ayda said, having born witness to the odd exchange- and had no idea what it was about. She mentally noted to ask Doctor Aax later. "Uhh right this way, excuse us Doctor. Enjoy your shore-leave." She smiled at Kiam.
"Yes, enjoy," the Argellian said back to her as they moved in a clump of people to the lift. Kiam watched them go and then turned. She reached into her pocket, gave the spanner instead some air and spun it before her, caught it, and then pocketed it again.
