Kiamenra Aax hadn't seen herself as a command-level officer before the crisis- and right now she still doesn't. Dutifully she is stepping up, making the mistake of trying to maintain a Sickbay and her "old life" as Chief Medical Officer, whilst trying to learn all of the Starfleet regulations, procedures, protocols, and duties of her new role. She will be found sleeping at her desk, passed out around mountains of datapads full of both reports and study materials.

None of this is natural to her- she is going to have to learn to stand up to a Commanding Officer for more than medical, scientific reasons, but on the grounds of it being right for the ship.

Kiamenra is perfectionistic- one who holds herself to a hard standard. Now that she has almost one hundred lives to protect.

Receptive-Projective Telepathy and Empathy: Kiamenra has advanced telepathic and empathic skills. As with all of her kind, they "switch on" sometime in mid-puberty. Kiam's expertise with both as par for her species- she is neither deficient nor exceptional. Being among Humans and "undisciplined minds" was a challenge for Kiam at first, as Betazed is a completely transparent society. Humans by contract are closed off, deeply private beings. Kiam has learned to filter the thoughts and emotions of others to a degree- a skill that other Betazoids notice as "closed off" or "introverted" in their culture.

Kiam's nature as a Doctor is advantaged by her skill- she can sense pain, stress, and mental health of her patients, and the mind is a fascinating landscape to her. She is as much a counselor as a surgeon to her crew. However, she is cautious about revealing her psionic abilities to non-Betazoids. Her race is new to the galactic community, and some do not like their minds invaded.

Kiam does practice Betazoid medicine which does involve intimate contact and the probing/linking of minds to help walk someone through their mental distress. She is fascinated by Vulcan mind-melding culture, as well as the techniques the Argelian people use to examine the moments and facets of emotion..

Pain: A childhood illness leaves Kiam in chronic monthly pain. Her uterus has fibrotic scarring and stenosis that makes monthly menstruation painful. She has Fallopian stenosis which leaves her ovaries prone to causing cysts.

Non-Technical: Kiam begrudgingly admits that she is not the most technically minded person on the ship. Her world is medical equipment and the day to day technology one encounters, but she is neither engineer nor pilot. She has learned to approach it with dry, sometimes self-deprecating humor rather than simply pan technology as "too much." In the end she would admit that technology is a double-edged sword that has become quite pervasive and cut us off from our natural habitats.

Watercolor: Kiam's favorite relaxation is watercolor. Most of the time she paints after work or on shore-leave. On shore-leave, she likes to take her easel and brushes to an inspiring location and paint. It is the end-point of her love of day-hiking. She also likes to do still life and the nude form. What she likes about watercolor vs. acrylics or oil is the diffused and dreamy nature watercolors almost demand.

Life Drawing: Life Drawing began as an interest in anatomy and her professional study, and grew organically through her love of painting watercolor. She likes to draw male and female, of several different species. Being Betazoid she is comfortable with nudity and its inherent honesty, and she tries to convey that sense of ease in her work.

Day Hiking: Kiam can tolerate long periods on a starship- but when the chance for Shoreleave hits, she is as eager as anyone. Kiam likes to go on day hikes. Often she brings her art supplies with her, or else a camera to capture an image for later on the ship. When she can't hike, she's willing to do laps around the ship, but it doesn't have quite the same cathartic effect.

Crochet: Most surgeons and doctors do something to keep their fingers nimble. For Kiam, her skill of choice harkens back to times as a child with her grandmother: she crochets. Kiam has completed very, very few things with her skill and has a drawer full of half-completed, half-started projects. Prior to the accident, Kiam would sometimes arrive early at staff briefings and would crochet as the Captain and XO discussed the mission profile. It also helps her think.

Fencing: A sixteen-year-old Kiam would have scoffed at the idea, but the Doctor picked up an interest in Fencing at the Academy. She was first introduced to it by a love interest, but she quickly developed a curiosity about it independently. Kiam has been fencing for about ten years now. She prefers to converse with foils and uses the Visconti pistol grip. She likes it because it helps keep her wrists loose, forearms strong and eyes sharp.

Pranks: Kiam has a pranking side, tied with an irreverent and sarcastic tendency to her personality. And she enjoys irony. To that end, she does occasionally like to prank friends- never dangerous, usually just briefly inconvenient: sneaking into someone's quarters to rearrange furniture, switching the contents of their desk drawers, and the like. Only with her eldest sister did she tend to inject an edge of trying to embarrass her.

Father: Eirrum Tawa (Age 68). Eirrum Tawa comes from the city of Loneel, seeking out a quieter pastoral life in Neander Vaz. He is a nervous man who works behind the scenes in the Neander media. As he pushes into a time that he can be expected to scale back his contributions to society and focus on his own desires, Eirrum is unsure of what he wants to do. He never developed many hobbies beyond reading.

Mother: Tirra Aax (Age 68). Tirra is in the middle of "The Change" which has pushed her desire for social gatherings, increased social prestige, and the adoration of the young and handsome. Betazoid culture is very trusting and honest and Tirra would not dream of cheating on her husband- but she certainly enjoys the adoration of younger men. Bored of Neander Vaz, Tirra is constantly pushing her daughters to join her in Loneel, sometimes for days or weeks at a time.

She has discarded, for the moment, her hobbies and duties of being a small clinic's administrator for the glamor of the city. Tirra and Kiam have a turbulent relationship right now- Kiam is trying to be patient of her mother's "Change" but she finds her abandoning her job in the medical field to be wrong, and her push for Betazed's upper crust as shallow. Tirra isn't in any danger of breaking into the ranks of Betazed's Aristocratic Houses, but she is witty.

Older Sister: Delexa Aax (Age 40). Delexa and Kiam have looked into each other's minds and seen something (perhaps in themselves) that they do not like. The oldest and youngest Aax sisters have never gotten along. Delexa has a mean streak and enjoyed using her size and status as eldest to torment her younger sibling, with Leaxa futilely trying to play referee. Kiam, as a child, got Delexa back with pranks, wit, and simply the fact that she could outrun her sister.

As adults, the two still do not like one another and Delexa's partner, a woman of Gentry House influence, loves inciting discord between the two. And she is always eager to come to her partner's aid as a form of reinforcing their own bond. Kiam's opinion of her sister, who lives in Loneel, is that she is a "social-scheming bitch." The only thing that keeps the two glued together is Kiam's fondness her Delexa's adopted son, Esban, who is a sensitive and artistic boy.

Older Sister: Leaxa Aax (Age 36). Leaxa is similar to her father and is the peacekeeper of the family. She is a shy, warm, round woman who gets the most joy out of reading and gardening. As a member of the family she is the one who has probably come closest to living the pastoral life Neander Vaz was intended for; she embraced it. Leaxa married a man a little younger than herself who has a similar mindset.

As Leaxa has distanced herself from the family's politics, Delexa has taken to calling Leaxa, "Painfully Pastoral" and "My Simple Sister." Delexa's scheming no longer interests Leaxa who has found a cozy niche and started a family free of some of the Aax's toxicity. She keeps in contact with Kiam and her Father, but wants nothing to do with the city.

Maternal Grandmother: Keanendra Aax (Age 91). The Aax matriarch is in the twilight of her life. She lives with Leaxa and focuses on those few lasting moments. It's very likely she will pass before Kiam could return. By Betazoid standards, Keanendra is quite venerable- it's strange for a Betazoid woman to reach 100. She paints and helps Leaxa in the garden and takes increasingly frequent naps.

Brother in Law (via Leaxa): Ikaan Hom (Age 34). Ikaan is a simple, taciturn man who was raised among the fishermen communities on Neander Bay. He is an ethical man who has no interest in space and quietly wonders what Kiam is thinking about leaving their peaceful world. He is infamously disinterested in politics and is not curious about the surrounding world.

Sister in Law (via Delexa): Lweestrala Ono (Age 43). Lweestrala is absolutely everything that Kiam hates about the aristocracy. From her powdered face to her ridiculous wigs, Kiam wishes someone would accidentally snap the anorexic woman in half with her corset. Lweestrala is an instigator of discord and seems to exacerbate the worst tendencies of her partner and Kiam's sister, Delexa.

Lweestrala is an immensely clever person with a quicker, sharper wit than Kiam- which just makes Kiam dislike her more. Lweestrala is a bitter person, as she will inherit nothing from the family as a younger daughter. Thus, she enjoys thumbing her nose at her own family as well.
