Character Outline

Summary Asintu-Farflung is a Mendoran-After technical scout aboard the exploratory freighter Basindra, de facto serving as its day-to-day leader. She and her crew are looking for technological and cultural solutions to the ecological devastation of their planet, Mendor-After. They are traveling throughout the stellar desert to make contact with other species, learn about their unique practices and resources, and eventually return the knowledge to the Fleet-Home. Mendorans are increasingly viewed as valuable prey as their species’ situation deteriorates, so Asintu-Farflung prioritizes stealth and caution when she is in charge.

When she was young, Asintu-Growing had no intentions of becoming a technical scout. She enjoyed tinkering and expected to become a maintenance technician on her orbital station, Jekendi-Silla. However, her Mendoran-Before grandmother decided to launch the Basindra expedition, and Asintu-Growing felt a responsibility to watch out for her in the dangers of space. Reluctantly, the two Mendorans gathered a small crew and set out into the desert.

The next decade went well for Asintu-Farflung and her team, and she steadily gained new skills and responsibilities. However, her grandmother withdrew increasingly into isolation as she ruminated on the cultural knowledge they acquired. Asintu-Farflung has grown colder and more hostile as time passes and her crew faces more and more danger—and more losses. From an initial crew of eight with well-stocked storage, the Basindra now only keeps Asintu-Farflung and her grandmother out of cryo-sleep. Her days are filled with endless monotonous maintenance and systems checks. Asintu-Farflung’s resolve to the mission wavers, but she refuses to shirk her duty… for now.
External Conflicts Asintu-Farflung faces intense loneliness and isolation. Her grandmother has withdrawn into her own cultural studies; half of her initial crew has died or left the ship; the other two remaining crew members are in cryo-sleep. The Basindra has dwindling resources and Asintu-Farflung has to make tough choices as its de facto skipper—where should they go next? Should they burn their precious resources on a high-warp trip to a promising port, or continue crawling along at warp two? Warp three? Should she relinquish the skipper’s chair to one of the cryo-frozen crew members and let someone else carry her burden?

Outside the context of the crew, Asintu-Farflung has been collating evidence that suggests that the Basindra is being shadowed. By who, how, with what intent: these are things she doesn’t know. But experience has taught her that anyone who approaches her freighter should be treated with suspicion, and anyone masking their approach doubly so.
Internal Conflicts Asintu-Farflung’s biggest challenge is the tension between her responsibility to her grandmother and her species, contrasted with her increasing skepticism about their mission’s chances of success. The challenges her ship alone faces seem more and more insurmountable, to say nothing of getting the politically chaotic Fleet-Home to work together to solve her species’ ecological and sociological problems. Why should she sacrifice her life, her grandmother’s life, and the life of her crew to slink through a hostile stellar desert? Even if she stumbled upon a solution to Mendor-After’s problems tomorrow, would she make it back to the Fleet-Home? Would they listen, or continue to dither while their planet’s ember goes out?
